Design Principles

You may not be interested in web design fundementals, in fact that is probably why you are here, to leave it to someone else!

However, if you are interested, and to show that much thought goes into our designs, we would like to take the opportunity of sharing with you the attributes that underpin our understanding of EFFECTIVE web design.

All of our designs are built on these main principles to ensure that we provide excellent effective web design.

USABILITY

Usability will determine the success of a website

The visitor to the page is the only person who clicks the mouse and therefore decides everything.

User-centric design has become a standard approach for successful web design.

OBVIOUS

Don't Make Users Think

When creating a site, remove decisions that users need to consciously make.

The navigation and site architecture must be intuitive.

A clear structure, visual clues and easily recognizable links can help users.

People won’t stay long on your web site if they can’t find their way around it!

PATIENCE

Don't Squander Users' Patience

When offering visitors some service try to keep the user requirements minimal.

Ideally remove all barriers, don’t require subscriptions or registrations first.

A user registration alone is enough of an impediment to user navigation to cut down on incoming traffic.

FOCUS

Focus The Users' Attention

Web-sites provide both static and dynamic content so some aspects of the user interface attract attention more than others.

Focusing attention to areas of the site using visual elements can help your visitors get from one point to another.

The user experience which surely is the aim of the site in the first place involves the less thinking needed, the better.

FEATURES

Strive for Feature Exposure

From a design perspective, visually appealing elements actually aren’t a bad thing and guidelines are effective as they lead the visitors through the site content in a very simple and user-friendly way.

What matters is that the content is well-understood and visitors feel comfortable with the way they interact with the system.

WRITING

Make use of Effective Writing

The Web is different from traditional print.

Promotional writing, long text blocks without images and technical and business language will be ignored.

Use plain objective language in short and concise phrases, (come to the point as quickly as possible), use multiple heading levels, visual elements and bulleted lists to break the flow of uniform text blocks.

SIMPLICITY

Strive for Simplicity

The “keep it simple”-principle (KIS) should be the primary goal of site design.

Users are rarely on a site to enjoy the design, furthermore, in most cases they are looking for the information despite the design. Strive for simplicity instead of complexity.

Provide visitors with a clean and simple design without overcrowding them with unnecessary content.

WHITE SPACE

Don’t be afraid of the White Space

It’s hard to overestimate the importance of white space. Not only does it help to reduce the cognitive load for the visitors, but it makes it possible to perceive the information presented on the screen.

Complex structures are harder to read, scan, analyze and work with. If you have the choice between separating two design segments by a visible line or by some whitespace, it’s usually better to use the whitespace solution.

COMMUNICATE

Communicate Effectively with a “Visible Language”

Organize and provide the user with a clear and consistent conceptual structure.

Economise by doing the most with the least amount of cues and visual elements.

Simplicity means include only the elements that are most important for communication.

For clarity, all components should be designed so their meaning is not ambiguous.

CONVENTIONS

Conventions are our Friends

Conventions are very useful as they reduce the learning curve and the need to figure out how things work.

With conventions you can gain users’ confidence and trust and prove your credibility. Follow users’ expectations and understand what they’re expecting from a site navigation and structure.

If conventions are well-applied, users will be able to achieve unfamiliar objectives.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

This is the Key to developing a good visual presence within search engine listings and is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to your web site from search engines from search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.

If you design a website without adhering to certain SEO "rules", then you will have a web presence but people won't be able to find you or, worse still, they will find your competitors before they find you.

A website needs to be designed in such a way that search engines can easily read and review its contents allowing them to classify the site in an appropriate section to appear under targeted keyword, phrases and search terms.

Put in simple terms, you probably want people to find you listed high up in search engines when they search for "what you do" and in many cases, "where do you do it".

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and page coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

We understand the important factors involved in designing and optimising a site for search engines and you can be assured that these are built into your website right from it's inception.

We are also able to review an existing site and recommend and carry out changes to its structure to ensure that it is as "search engine friendly" as possible.

Content Management System (CMS)

If you are comfortable using a word processing environment and were happy to make simple changes to your website's textural content and images yourself then that is a much more cost effective way to look after your site.

We can develop a website, from the ground up, that incorporates designated areas that allow you, the website owner, to add, delete and ammend content on existing pages. That way you would only need your website designer when detailed changes need to be made to the overall design or a complete overhaul is required.

Online Stores and e-Commerce

Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular for products and services.

Allowing customers, at any time of day or night, to browse or search your product range, view photos, read details and prices is a great marketing tool, and simple but secure online ordering via credit or debit card can then be the incentive to make the purchase.

Some of the benefits are:

  • A cost effective access to a local, national and international market,
  • Cutting out the middle "person" can increase profit,
  • Your online shop runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year even when you are njot there,
  • Automated Order processing and quicker payment processing by directly integrating your ecommerce solutions to your bank,
  • Greater customer satisfaction. A modern ecommerce website design helps you provide all the customer support that is required.
  • Better customer information. Fully automated ecommerce solutions allow exchange of information to customers efficiently and cost effectively.
  • Simplify sales management

We can offer an affordable solution to suit your needs using simple but secure credit/debit card processing systems.
